Metro Manila Is Drowning in Rain Right Now — Your Garden Wants Some of It

There's a strange irony to gardening in the Philippines in August: the same rain that's flooding streets in Quezon City and keeping PAGASA's warning flags up is also some of the best water your plants will drink all year.

While the rest of the city is figuring out how to get the water out, here's a case for catching a little of it on purpose.

Why Rainwater Actually Is Different

It's easy to assume all water is the same once it hits the soil, but there are real differences worth knowing.

Tap water is treated with chlorine (and in some areas, chloramine) to keep it safe to drink — necessary for us, but not something your soil microbes signed up for. Some research also suggests that water with higher chloride content over time can interfere with a plant's ability to take up nitrate, one of the nutrients it needs most. Rainwater skips all of that.

There's also a persistent myth that rainwater is packed with nitrogen compared to tap water — that's mostly not true on a normal rainy day. But during an actual thunderstorm, lightning generates enough heat and pressure to convert atmospheric nitrogen into a form plants can use, which does end up in that rain. So a rain that comes with thunder is doing your garden a small favor that a quiet drizzle isn't.

The real advantage of rainwater isn't a nutrient bomb — it's what it doesn't have: no chlorine, no accumulated minerals, and a naturally slightly acidic pH that helps unlock nutrients already sitting in your soil.

Catching It Without Overcomplicating It

You don't need a full rainwater harvesting system to take advantage of this. A simple setup works:

  1. Position a food-grade container under a downspout, gutter corner, or even just under the edge of your roof where water naturally channels off.
  2. Cover it with mesh or a lid with small holes. This is non-negotiable in the Philippines — an open container of standing water is a mosquito breeding ground within days, and dengue risk goes up during rainy season. Useful tip:  Sprinkle a little  BTi   (Bacilus Thuringiensis Israelensis), a helpful non-toxic biochemical solution to effectively get rid of mosquito larvae in stagnant water.  
  3. Use it within a week or two, especially if it's uncovered or exposed to sunlight, so it stays fresh for your plants.
  4. Water at the base of the plant, not overhead, to get the most out of every liter and avoid encouraging fungal growth on leaves.

Even a single 20-liter drum can supply weeks of watering for a modest container garden — free, and better for your soil in the long run.

A Small Habit With a Bigger Payoff

Pair your rainwater catch with a mosquito-safe cover and, when it's time to water, a simple watering can or low-flow spout does the rest — no fancy irrigation needed.
