What Is Fish Meal?
Fish Meal is an all-natural soil additive made from carefully processed fish by-products, including fish trimmings, bones, heads, and other discarded fish parts. These materials are dried and finely ground to produce a nutrient-rich meal that can be added to garden soil and potting media.
It is naturally rich in nitrogen and phosphorus, with additional organic matter and naturally occurring micronutrients that support healthy plant development.
Fish Meal is suitable for many types of indoor and outdoor plants and may be used as a top dressing or mixed directly into potting media before planting.
Top 5 Benefits and Uses
1. Supports Lush, Healthy Leaf Growth
Fish Meal is naturally high in nitrogen, an essential plant nutrient that supports chlorophyll production and the development of greener, healthier leaves.
2. Encourages Strong Roots, Flowers, and Fruits
Its naturally occurring phosphorus supports root establishment, flower formation, and the development of fruiting plants.
3. Provides Gradual Plant Nutrition
Fish Meal breaks down slowly in the soil, providing a steady supply of nutrients over time rather than releasing everything at once.
4. Improves Soil and Potting Media
It adds organic matter that helps improve soil condition while supporting beneficial microorganisms responsible for breaking down nutrients into forms plants can absorb.
5. Helps Reduce Organic Waste
Fish Meal makes productive use of fish-processing by-products that might otherwise be discarded. It is a biodegradable and more environmentally responsible option for nourishing home garden plants.
Plants That Benefit Most
Fish Meal may be used for most types of plants, particularly:
Leafy vegetables such as pechay, lettuce, kale, and mustard greens
Herbs such as basil, mint, parsley, and oregano
Fruiting vegetables such as tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, and cucumbers
Apply up to 3 tablespoons per 3-gallon pot.
Sprinkle the Fish Meal evenly around the soil surface, keeping it a few centimeters away from the main stem. Mix it lightly into the top layer of the soil, then water thoroughly.
For smaller pots, reduce the amount proportionally.
When Preparing Potting Media
Mix the recommended amount evenly into the potting media before planting. Avoid placing concentrated Fish Meal directly against delicate roots.
Application Schedule
Repeat every 6 to 8 weeks, depending on the plant’s growth, condition, and nutrient requirements.
