What are Heirloom Seeds?

Heirloom seeds are open-pollinated seeds that have been carefully passed down through generations—often 50 years or more—because of their reliability, flavor, and cultural or historical value. Unlike hybrid or genetically modified (GMO) seeds, heirloom varieties naturally reproduce true-to-type, meaning the plants grown will be the same as their parent plants when seeds are saved and replanted.

Non-GMO seeds are seeds that have not been genetically modified in a laboratory using biotechnology techniques like gene splicing or genetic engineering.

Instead, they are developed through natural pollination methods (open-pollinated or hybridization) without altering their DNA at the molecular level. This makes them fundamentally different from GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) seeds, which are engineered to express specific traits such as pest resistance or herbicide tolerance.

🌱 Key Points About Non-GMO Seeds

Naturally Pollinated

Non-GMO seeds come from plants pollinated by wind, insects, or manual hand-pollination—not lab-based genetic modification.

Safe & Organic-Friendly

Since they aren’t engineered, they are compatible with organic farming practices and align with eco-conscious gardening values.

Wide Availability

Most seeds sold to home gardeners (including heirloom and many hybrid varieties) are already non-GMO, as GMO seeds are generally produced for large-scale commercial farming (e.g., corn, soy, canola).

Better for Seed Saving (if Open-Pollinated)

Non-GMO doesn’t automatically mean you can save seeds—but if the seeds are also open-pollinated (like heirlooms), you can replant them year after year.
